J.C. Price inducts 21 into Hall of Fame
Leon Gaither III played on Salisbury's 1974 championship football team that went 11-2, and he's proud of his son, Mackel, a burly West Rowan lineman who played on an 11-2 team this fall. But Leon Gaither III's father still owns family bragging rights and always will. He played on the undefeated 1940 J.C. Price High team that didn't allow a point. Gaither grew up believing his father's stories about coach Spencer Lancaster's Red Devils were exaggerations. But then he saw the 1940 team's scores in a story the Post did two years ago. "I was glad to find out it wasn't all tall tales," Gaither told a clapping, cheering audience at Price Hall of Fame induction ceremonies held at First Cavalry Baptist Church on Saturday. Price's athletic accomplishments during its run from 1922-1969 as Salisbury's high school for African-American students may sound like fairy tales, but they really happened.
Daily Blabber Celebrity Gossip Blog from iVillage Entertainment
In today's Cindy Adams column, the gossip diva reported that a large celeb wedding is set to take place "in the next few minutes" in Lake Como, Italy. She didn't know who would be tying the knot, but that "monsignors and bishoplets are running around acting important and hinting and winking. But saying nothing other than 'It's a big American actor.'" Now let's play a little game, shall we? Let's put on our sleuth caps and try to figure out who's getting hitched. I think the biggest clue here is Lake Como. Georgey Clooney has a fancy shmancy villa there, so I'm going to bet it's one of his friends. (It's certainly isn't him! Mr. Bachelor.) Based on that, here some possibilities: Brad & Angelina: Brad is pals with GC, and he and Angie are hotter than ever. (Did you see the photo of him babysitting Maddox and Zahara this week?) But she's filming a movie in NYC right now, which leaves little time for wedding plans.
Elling's Short Game
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Pardon the choice of words, but the imagery is of their own making. For Golfweek magazine, the noose tightened on Thursday. One day after the controversial cover artwork on Golfweek became the hottest topic in golf, a top PGA Tour official said that some of its advertising scheduled to run in the publication might be pulled. This week's cover image on the magazine is a hangman's noose, a provocative reference to the live comments uttered on the air Jan. 4 by Golf Channel broadcaster Kelly Tilghman, which caused a firestorm in golf circles. Already this week, PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem and PGA of America CEO Joe Steranka have expressed either disappointment or outrage at the decision to feature such a controversial and racially sensitive image on one of the game's largest publications.
Prison worker took drugs into jail
She was stopped and searched on October 23, 2006, when a sniffer dog showed an interest in the bag she was carrying. Heroin and cannabis with an estimated value of £21,000 was found inside a coffee jar. The court was told that rumours about Powell’s relationship with an inmate were circulating in the prison. She said she took the drugs into the jail because she had received a letter threatening exposure. Simon Drew, for the defence, said that Powell was full of remorse and shame for "this single incident". .
Mora: Coaching in Seattle his ‘priority’
His decision came after the Redskins' owner had sent a plane to fly him east and then hosted Seattle's assistant head coach and defensive backs coach at the tycoon's guesthouse during two days of interviews. "I want to thank the Redskins organization and owner Daniel Snyder for the opportunity to interview for the head coaching position," Mora said in a statement released by the Seahawks. "The process reconfirmed that the quality of life for my family in Seattle is my first priority. This past year has been a great experience both professionally and personally for myself, my wife Shannon, and our kids. We are very happy members of this community and the Seattle Seahawks organization." Holmgren added Mora, 46, to his staff soon after he was fired as head coach of the Falcons on New Year's Day, 2007, after three seasons leading Atlanta.
Jeff Thelen's Blog
Hi everybody. I'm back from really slacking off from the blog over the holidays. This week, it's just a few random thoughts. How many people are sick at your home, office or school? Seems like everyone in this newsroom is fighting some sort of bug right now. My symptoms are a sore throat, tiredness and aches and pains. I have no congestion, but my nose only runs at night. Wierd, isn't it? Alison Struve blows her nose so much she sounds like a foghorn. Stephanie Luisier and chief photographer Randy Bise both have that "sick sound" when they talk. Was it just me or did the Badgers seem a little unfocused and unprepared for their bowl game? Perhaps it's the long layoff between their last regular season game and the contest on January 1. It was a sort of a fun game to watch, even if it was rather sloppily played.
Marathons ran into tough luck in 2007
The most popular Michigan marathons include the scenic Bayshore Marathon along the Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City on May 24, the Detroit Free Press Marathon on October 19 and the Grand Rapids Marathon, also on October 19. Training help is available for marathons both inside and outside of Michigan through Team Playmakers and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training (TNT) program. Note that TNT involves fundraising requirements. .
