Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure

Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting.

I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK.

Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little?

Giuliani's work for drug maker probed

Brownlee found himself on the telephone last year with a political and legal superstar, Rudolph W. Giuliani.

For years, Mr. Brownlee and his small team had been building a case that the maker of the painkiller OxyContin had misled the public when it claimed the drug was less prone to abuse than competing narcotics. The drug was believed to be a factor in hundreds of deaths involving its abuse.

Granholm backs Cobo expansion

She said the proposed 120,000 square-foot expansion shows the region is fighting other states to retain the North American International Auto Show, an economic juggernaut held at Cobo that generates almost $600 million a year for the local economy.

"We must have it stay in the city from here on out," Granholm said. "We will fight to keep it."

The plan faces legislative hurdles, tax extensions and approval of several financial transactions in order to work. Barring roadblocks, construction could be finished and Cobo ready for the 2011 auto show, Assistant Wayne County Executive Matthew Schenk said.

The one key player missing from Thursday's unveiling was long-time skeptic L. Brooks Patterson, the Oakland County executive who has offered rival expansion plans and questioned expenses and tax spending.

A talented student rebuilds his life after battling depression - and ...

On the evening of Sept. 28, at an apartment complex in King of Prussia, a tragedy and a miracle occurred 2.5 seconds apart. The tragedy took place when Jordan Burnham, 18, a senior just nominated to the homecoming court at Upper Merion High School, jumped out his ninth-floor window. The miracle happened 90 feet below, when he hit the ground at 50 m.p.h. - and survived. Jordan has no recollection of going out the window. Even though he was suffering from depression, neither he nor anyone close to him ever expected him to do something so impulsive, so lethal. "I had everything to live for," he says now. Today, 114 days later, Jordan's body remains badly broken. With the help of three therapists, he stood on his right leg last week for 60 seconds. He still cannot stand on his left leg, encased in scaffolding.

NFC Championship Game won't be coldest

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Today's NFC Championship Game at Lambeau Field isn't likely to be the coldest ever in the NFL, but temperatures are expected to be near zero at kickoff.

The coldest game in NFL history was the 1981 AFC Championship Game, played Jan. 10, 1982, at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium. The temperature was minus-9, and the wind chill plunged the readings to minus-59 as the Bengals beat San Diego 27-7.

Next was the Ice Bowl on Dec. 31, 1967, for the NFL title at Lambeau Field. The Packers beat Dallas 21-17 on Bart Starr's quarterback sneak in the final seconds. It was minus-13 that day and the wind-chill factor was estimated at minus-48.

Projections for today are temperatures reaching a high of 3 degrees, and the thermometer almost certainly will register below zero during what amounts to a night game.

Perseverance paid off for 8 inductees

There will be a common theme tonight when the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame welcomes eight new members.

Perseverance.

Hockey's Mike Bossy and Cassie Campbell, football's Doug Flutie, wrestler Daniel Igali, Olympic cross-country skier Beckie Scott, baseball's Larry Walker and sports pioneers Sam Jacks and Robert Steadward all overcame obstacles and doubters to reach the pinnacle of their sports or to make sports more accessible to others.

Lakers Bryant calm after blowout loss against Spurs

Reflecting on Lakers owner Jerry Buss' decision to trade Shaquille O'Neal in 2004 instead of meeting O'Neal's demands at the time for $30 million-plus annual salary, Jackson said: "Probably I'd say this guy (Buss) would do it nine of out 10 times."

Chris Mihm started, missed all three shots in six minutes and was on the bench in favor of Kwame Brown to start the second half.

Jackson has heard Dennis Rodman is pushing to be hired as a WNBA coach and lent support, saying: "Having him have to explain things and come out of himself and talk is really good."
