UWI at 60 - Its role in nation building

The University of the West Indies officially begins its 60th anniversary celebrations today. Those 60 years were directed at producing a new Caribbean from out of the old. The next 60 years will have to be about producing a global Caribbean and happily the UWI has a strategic plan in place to equip it to do so.

The UWI was a product of many things happening at once - modernisation, decolonisation, regionalisation, and nation building. One of the sins ofcolonialism was that for 300 years the British never saw it fit to build a university in the region. It was only after a series of riots in the 1930s that a British commission realised the need to promote a middle class in preparation for eventual self-government. Before adult suffrage, there was no university in Jamaica. By the start of the new century, almost 15 per cent of Jamaicans had access to tertiary education.

Marathons ran into tough luck in 2007

The most popular Michigan marathons include the scenic Bayshore Marathon along the Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City on May 24, the Detroit Free Press Marathon on October 19 and the Grand Rapids Marathon, also on October 19.

Training help is available for marathons both inside and outside of Michigan through Team Playmakers and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training (TNT) program. Note that TNT involves fundraising requirements.

Beautiful Miss Idaho in LCHS Parade

Below, Family Phil's shot of historic downtown Wallace. BTW, Phil has a Little-Ears-Have-Big-Windows post here.

*HBO's still trying to figure out what Stebbijo/Your Choice means by done-r here.

*CDADave/Thin Air is trying out a new look as he prepares to return to the HBO blogosphere in a big way on Monday. He's asking folks what they think here.

*Amy Crooks/That's Life. Life Goes On sounds as though she's been working hard for her money and not blogging too much here.

*Marianne Love/Slight Detour has some fascinating historical info about Bonner County, including how Hoodoo Creek was formed and how Sagle got its name after losing out to Eagle in southern Idaho here.

Also: Herb Huseland/Bay Views puts in his 2 cents about the inheritance tax here, Digital Fog has another fine parody here, ErinG/Idaho Native is getting nervous about the birth process here and Cis Gors/From A Simple Mind analyzes an online quiz she took here.

New Tech fan blog: 'Shake and Bake' cooking up great future with ...

JASON JONES: It was about this time last year that Derek Dooley arrived on campus and had to basically start from scratch to put together a recruiting class. To top things off, he had about six weeks to get the job done. This year, thanks to hours and hours of work, Dooley and his staff are sitting in a much better position. Coach Dooley has commitments from 12 high school athletes. In addition, junior college standout Kwame Jordan, a 6-5 defensive end, signed in December. Jordan had offers from Marshall and Troy, but it's his former high school teammate that might be his biggest contribution. John Ehret end Eric Harper switched his commitment from Nebraska to Tech when he visited in December along with Jordan, his former teammate. Other big names pledged to the Dawgs are Bastrop athlete Bud Patterson and Mississippi prep quarterback Bret Jefcoat.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Bump J FREE!?! Jim Jones' Reality Show? Mike Jones ...

I was all hyped up to see Jim Jones in the reality show they were filming on VH1, but I don't know what's become of it. It is going around that there was tension between Jim and the producers of the show. There is no such thing as a true reality show, but there is something called “scripted reality." That's what Run and the family do. And that works for some, but Jim Jones is the real deal. I heard he just wasn't with the script and wasn't able to flip it to fit his mode of operation. All the filming is supposedly done, but the editing is very tricky with a reality-based stickler like Jim Jones the Capo.

BUMP J IS FREE!

I'll never forget bumpin' Chicagorilla, Bump J's mixtape. I was waiting for the official album.

Jeff Thelen's Blog

Hi everybody. I'm back from really slacking off from the blog over the holidays. This week, it's just a few random thoughts.

How many people are sick at your home, office or school? Seems like everyone in this newsroom is fighting some sort of bug right now. My symptoms are a sore throat, tiredness and aches and pains. I have no congestion, but my nose only runs at night. Wierd, isn't it? Alison Struve blows her nose so much she sounds like a foghorn. Stephanie Luisier and chief photographer Randy Bise both have that "sick sound" when they talk.

Was it just me or did the Badgers seem a little unfocused and unprepared for their bowl game? Perhaps it's the long layoff between their last regular season game and the contest on January 1. It was a sort of a fun game to watch, even if it was rather sloppily played.
